VIV Asia 2025: Showcasing the Future of Insect Protein in Aquaculture

Writer: Protenga AdminProtenga Admin

VIV Asia 2025 in Bangkok once again served as the premier gathering for feed-to-food industry professionals across Asia. This year's exhibition showcased cutting-edge innovations across animal health, additives, nutrition, and farm and processing equipment sectors, connecting stakeholders throughout the entire production value chain.

One of the key highlights of our participation was joining a panel discussion with AFFIA and other insect industry players. During this engaging session, we presented how we're scaling and growing our network of Smart Insect Farms (with our proprietary InsectOS), and unlocking the full potential of insect agriculture across palm oil mills in the region. The discussion provided valuable insights into industry challenges and collaborative opportunities for sustainable insect production.

We observed the continued strong interest in insect protein and insect oil for animal feed in Southeast Asia. This aligns with broader market projections showing the Black Soldier Fly (BSF) market is expected to reach $3.96 billion by 2033, growing at an impressive CAGR of 31.0% (Source: Business Wire).

What's particularly notable for our industry is that in 2024, the aquafeed segment accounts for the largest share (44.3%) of the BSF market, highlighting the pivotal role of insect protein in transforming aquaculture nutrition.

Studies have demonstrated that diets supplemented with Black Soldier Fly larvae can:

  • Enhance growth rates

  • Improve feed conversion ratios

  • Boost overall fish health

One study we found showed that a 30% BSFL diet group exhibited superior performance with the highest growth rates and the lowest FCR (2.33), while maintaining excellent fillet quality (Source: MDPI). This represents a significant opportunity for the aquaculture sector to reduce its reliance on wild-caught fish for feed production.

At VIV, we also participated in the Aquatic Asia conference, which featured several enlightening presentations from feed additives companies on recent trial results. The dominant theme across these presentations was gut health and digestive health as critical factors for growth promotion and disease prevention in aquaculture species.

This focus dovetails perfectly with our product offerings, as our Hermet Protein (insect protein) and Hermet Oil (insect oil) provide substantial benefits for digestive health in aquatic species. The connections between improved gut function, enhanced immune response, and overall performance were repeatedly emphasized throughout the conference.

In partnership with the Asian Food and Feed Insect Association (AFFIA), our booth attracted consistent visitor interest throughout all exhibition days. The level of engagement confirmed the growing recognition of insect-derived ingredients as mainstream nutritional components in progressive feed formulations across Southeast Asia.

Particularly encouraging were discussions with aquaculture feed formulators eager to incorporate BSF protein as a sustainable alternative to traditional fishmeal. Their enthusiasm reflects industry recognition that BSF offers not just a replacement for conventional ingredients but brings additional functional benefits.

A significant focus during our time in Bangkok was strengthening relationships with our regional distribution partners while exploring new opportunities. These connections are crucial to our mission of making our health and nutrition products available across all Southeast Asian countries and beyond.

The strong interest in insect-based products demonstrated at VIV Asia 2025 reinforces our distribution strategy and provides confidence that market demand will continue to accelerate across the region.

The exhibition reinforced our conviction that Southeast Asia remains at the forefront of adopting innovative, sustainable feed solutions. With the Asia Pacific region already holding the greatest share of the global insect protein market (57.1% by volume in 2019, Source: Springer), we anticipate continued growth and innovation in this dynamic market.

We're particularly encouraged by the industry's increasing focus on gut health and sustainable nutrition, areas where our BSF protein and oil products deliver exceptional value.
